It is also possible to import custom lists from hosts files and to whitelist domains as you see best. The following lists are also available through the Options console: It simply blocks domains known to belong to advertising and malware sources based on community-developed blocklists.īy default the following filter lists are used: Over the years, uBlock Origin’s list of features has grown. WebRTC blocking (uBO-Extra is required to block WebRTC connections in Chromium).Uses community-developed blocklists and can custom lists.100% free and open-source (won’t even take donations!).UBlock Origin is stuffed to the gills with more features than we can realistically cover in this review. It uses community-based blocklists to filter out unwanted traffic, and users are free to add new blocklists as they please. UBlock Origin shares the same codebase as uMatrix, which performs a similar job, but which is aimed at more advanced users. We cannot emphasize enough that uBlock Origin should not be confused with uBlock, the latter of which is now owned by Adblock Plus and participates in its "Acceptable Ads" scheme. Developer Raymond Hill “self-forked” uBlock Origin after transferring the original uBlock project to a different developer in 2015, after which time the two projects have been completely separate. UBlock Origin is a fork of uBlock, but both have the same original founder. UBlock Origin is a browser add-on for Firefox, Chrome (including Chromium and Opera), and Edge. Interestingly, the project actively refuses donations. Use uBlock Origin's logger if you want to see and possibly filter WebSocket connections made visible by uBO-Extra.UBlock Origin is 100% free and open-source software, meaning any developer can do what they like with the code without paying a fee. Your browser should allow you to hide the icon if it annoys you. The extension has no interactive UI, just an icon in the toolbar to remind it's enabled. "Revealed: The naughty tricks used by web ads to bypass blockers" (The Register). The developer console-detecting code works only for Chromium-based browsers however, and therefore the obfuscation technology is not used when using Firefox (a different web page is served for Firefox). The company behind the technology understands how hostile its technology is to users, and thus tries to hide what is being done by making it difficult to investigate by detecting whether the browser's developer console is opened, and when it detects it is opened, it ceases completely to make use of the obfuscation mechanism. I consider this to be extremely hostile to users, even those not using a content blocker, as it allows third-party servers to read/write cookies even if a user chose to block 3rd-party cookies through your browser setting. Instart Logic's technology used to disguise third-party network requests as first-party network requests, including the writing/reading of third-party cookies as first-party cookies. To foil hostile anti-user mechanisms used to work around content blockers or even privacy settings in a browser. New version will be updated automatically.Keep in mind you will have to update manually when a new version is released.Click "Load unpacked extension.", select the zip file you downloaded above.Go to Extensions, check "Developer mode".Download latest version (.zip) from Releases.Manually, using your browser's "Load unpacked extension." feature: See "Sites on which uBO-Extra is useful". There is no need for such an extension so far on Firefox, and thus there is no version for Firefox. The extension is useful only for Chromium-based browsers. Instart Logic's anti-user agent technology appears to have gone away and consequently the extension has become useless, as its main purpose was to foil Instart Logic's 3rd parties obfuscation technology.įor the historical record, these were the extension stats when I unpublished it:Ī companion extension to uBlock Origin: to gain ability to foil early anti-user mechanisms working around content blockers or even a browser privacy settings. Important: As of October 20, 2020, uBO-Extra is discontinued and is no longer present in the Chrome Web store. ![]()
